BrainStep is built on the belief that your story belongs to you. This policy explains plainly what we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it. We don't sell your data. We don't train on your conversations without your knowledge. What you share with BrainStep stays between you and BrainStep.
Who we are
BrainStep is a product of Burns Ventures LLC, a Louisiana limited liability company. You can reach us at support@brainstep.app.
What we collect
BrainStep collects only what is necessary to provide the service:
- Conversations. The messages you send to BrainStep are processed by our AI providers (Anthropic and OpenAI) to generate responses. Conversations are not permanently stored on our servers unless you use Memory Keeper or the Living Portrait features.
- Living Portrait and Memory Keeper stories. If you use these features, your cognitive portrait, threads, and Memory Keeper stories are stored securely in our database (Upstash Redis) and associated with your anonymous user identifier.
- Anonymous user identifier. We assign a random identifier (stored in your browser's local storage) to associate your portrait and memories with your device. This identifier contains no personal information.
- Voice input. If you use the voice feature, your audio is sent to OpenAI's Whisper service for transcription and is not stored by BrainStep after transcription is complete.
- Payment information. If you subscribe to BrainStep Pro, payments are processed by Stripe. BrainStep never sees or stores your credit card details.
- Email address. If you sign in or contact us, we collect your email address to communicate with you.
What we do not collect
- We do not collect your name, location, or demographic information unless you voluntarily share it in conversation.
- We do not use advertising trackers or sell your data to third parties.
- We do not use your conversations to train AI models without your explicit consent.
- We do not use third-party analytics services at this time.
How we use your information
- To generate AI responses to your questions and conversations.
- To build and maintain your Living Portrait and Memory Keeper stories across sessions.
- To process payments for BrainStep Pro subscriptions.
- To respond to support requests and communicate with you about your account.
Third-party services
BrainStep uses the following third-party services to operate:
- Anthropic — AI responses. Your conversations are processed under Anthropic's privacy policy.
- OpenAI — AI responses and voice transcription (Whisper). Processed under OpenAI's privacy policy.
- Upstash Redis — Secure database storage for portraits, threads, and Memory Keeper stories.
- Stripe — Payment processing for Pro subscriptions. BrainStep never stores your payment details.
- Vercel — Hosting and deployment infrastructure.
- Resend — Email delivery for account-related communications.
Data retention
Conversation history that is not part of your Living Portrait or Memory Keeper is not retained after your session ends. Your Living Portrait, threads, and Memory Keeper stories are retained for as long as your account is active or until you request deletion.
Your rights and data deletion
You have the right to request deletion of all data associated with your BrainStep account at any time. To request deletion, email us at support@brainstep.app with the subject line "Data Deletion Request." We will permanently delete your Living Portrait, threads, Memory Keeper stories, and all associated data within 30 days.
Please note that deleting your data will permanently remove your Living Portrait, Memory Keeper stories, and all BrainStep memory features. This cannot be undone.
Children's privacy
BrainStep is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@brainstep.app.
Security
We take reasonable technical measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure database storage, and security headers on all pages. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but we are committed to protecting your information to the best of our ability.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of BrainStep after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
